Growing up in Scotland my mum did yoga and was very dedicated to her Sadhana. When she found Dru Yoga my Dad, a GP, became interested in the health benefits and began attending retreats and courses too. I did a little bit of yoga, attending Mum’s classes sometimes. But it wasn’t until I moved to Australia in 1997 that I started doing yoga regularly.

I began a daily home practice when I was pregnant with my daughter and then joined the FinY Teacher Training course when she was a toddler. I loved teaching yoga classes and my teaching was, even then, influenced by my experience of Dru Yoga. In 2011 I started a 3 year Dru Yoga Teacher Training Course (TTC) in Brisbane; flying to Brisbane for a 4 day course 3 times a year. I loved being immersed in the beautiful heart energy of Dru for these modules. I learnt a lot and made some lovely friends.

When Dru decided to run a TTC in WA in 2013 I became part of the support team. In helping to run the courses I was learning from the senior teachers, deepening my knowledge and learning the skills to become a Teacher Trainer. When a 2nd course was held in 2017 I was part of the teaching team and the course co-ordinator. I have always cherished this time when I got to work closely with my senior colleagues and learn so much from them.

There is always more to learn in yoga. I have completed several Dru courses: Dru Meditation Teacher Training, Dru Back Care, Dru Breath Coach and a Science of Sadhana course. Also a few non-Dru courses like the Science of Stretching with Lucas at YogaBody. I continue to help with Dru courses, which are often run online these days, and particularly enjoy working on the Back Care course.

My connection with the Ashram goes back to the 1990s when I attended a retreat with Chris Barrington, a Dru founding member, who was visiting from the UK. It was the venue for my FinY course in 2006 – I have happy memories of our course days in the yoga hall. I was on the relief teacher list for several years but always said I wouldn’t teach a regular class as it was too far from my home in East Victoria Park. But when Colleen took long service leave I agreed to take her class temporarily and I found it hard to leave so I’m still there every Friday morning. It is an honour and a pleasure to teach at the Beacon Yoga Centre and I hope that I am able to offer my teaching for  many years to come.
